Carl Robinson Bio
Who are you; family, where you grew up, what you do when you’re not riding?
I am Carl Robinson and have lived in Middlebury VT for 11 years. I grew up in Prescott, AZ and first attended the University of AZ and then Northern Arizona University where I earned a degree in Parks and Recreation Management. I have always loved the outdoors, hiking, backpacking, cycling, rock climbing and more. I began working in a bike shop in 1993, since then I have worked as a mechanic in many shops in AZ and VT and currently co-own Frog Hollow Bikes in Middlebury. I also worked for many years as an outdoor guide for UofA, as an outreach coordinator for Coconino Parks and Recreation, as well as a trails coordinator for Flagstaff Biking Organization. Most recently, alongside Frog Hollow Bikes, I am also the executive director for the Middlebury Area Land Trust.
Are you involved in other organizations? Executive Director for the Middlebury Area Land Trust, Co-Owner of Frog Hollow Bikes, and serve on the advisory boards for the Town of Middlebury Parks and Recreation Dept. and the Safe Routes Program.
What is your favorite trail/place to ride in Addison county? Chipman Hill
How long have you been mountain biking? If dirt roads on a bmx bike counts, then I’ve ridden since I was 10, when I received a red/chrome bmx bike for my birthday. We lived way out in the woods, so I raced around on our dirt roads, built jumps, and pretty much always came home with some type of wound from crashing.
How often do you ride? There is rarely a day that I don’t ride, whether it’s to work, running errands, or going on a fun Mountain or Road Ride.
Do you race? I raced in AZ and will still occasionally enter a race. My last race was in February of 2016 at the 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo near Tucson,AZ.
What do you ride and/or how many bikes do you own? Since I co-own of a bike shop, I am on different bikes all of the time. I am most currently riding a Fat CAAD 1 for a Mountain Bike, but I also have a Santa Cruz Blur, an old Stumpjumper Hardtail, a Trek Boone Crossbike, a Trek Domane Road bike, a Cannondale Supersix single speed, a Bridgestone single speed bike, and a unicycle. And those are just mine …my kids and wife have a few bikes as well.
What inspired you to mtn bike? I love being outdoors, the feel of moving through nature, the exhilaration of speeding along a trail, and the challenge of overcoming obstacles.
What gets you through that really hard ride? Just knowing that I am doing something I enjoy[CMS1] .
What do you hope to contribute as a member of ACBC? I would like to help get all of our local trails on the map, meaning signed and developed to a level in which riders of all ages and levels are able to get out and enjoy Mountain Biking.
Share a cool, funny or bizarre story you had while riding . This is kind of a riding story, but one I liked to tell people about for a while. While messing around on a BMX bike one day, which had these gnarly shin scraper pedals I crashed and received some deep scratches on my calf. So for a while I was telling people that I was out Mountain Biking one day and a Mountain Lion started chasing me, I narrowly escaped but received these scratch marks. Most people believed the story.
